Regret#3-2
Act II
A bit of joy
One thing kru knows apart from soothing her always raged twin
sister is that she is the eldest and the mother of the group. When she
practically dragged Sohan to accompany her, she did so to purchase something to
eat. It was evident she didn’t love Shourya like a loyal friend in the
beginning, but as time went by she started having feelings for him. It was
bittersweet. One minute she hates his guts and one minute she loves his dreamy
smile and bouncy silky hair. Of course, she never told anyone about it because
that would be very wrong. She thought he was handsome from the moment Shalini
so proudly showed him off on her birthday night. The day the boyfriend was
introduced to the group was her most memorable day. More memorable than the
time she won championship for quiz. She was smart but a fool in love. But she
was smart. She made sure no one had a clue. In fact she was the one who
proposed they invite him to the trip but so cleverly deleted that message so no
one could track it back to her. She tried many ways to get closer to him. And
she hated how every time his girlfriend got in the way. Shalini didn’t mind her
that much because “that’s just how kru is! She becomes close really easy!”
Shalini told Shourya when he asked her why she was so clingy. It’s not that he
hated the attention; it was just getting distracting to him, that’s all. Shourya
tried any positive vibes he could get because of the unwelcoming duo, Karthika
and Mahesh. He knew they hated him but didn’t think they hated him well enough
to do a background check on him.
When Kruthika and Sohan returned with a bunch of snacks,
everyone’s eyes lit up, even grumpy Karthika broke into a smile after hours of
frown. Shourya wasn’t happy. Sohan suggested everyone to take some packets with
them and eat on the way. They made sure to buy just enough for everyone. Though
most of the stuff was not legible, they guessed from the pictures. Instant
noodles in a cup, packet, box, bottle, it was everywhere. They were all amused.
While everyone was admiring them and packing into pockets and bags, Shourya
whispered in Shalini’s ears. Kruthika saw that and wished it was her. “Guys! We
are going to be late, let’s go!!” Shalini shouted cheerfully. Everyone cleared
the place, while Shourya disappeared for a few seconds to the counter and
returned to pack at the exit. “I don’t see no rain, I can’t believe they
stopped the flight for this” Sohan said sadly. “Now now, don’t delve in past,
let’s find the cab to the hotel” kru said hopefully. It was already 10 pm and
pitch dark, there was no moon, streetlights in poor working state and no one in
sight. Everyone turned to shourya for the ‘ride to the nearest comfortable
hotel’. It was awkward for a sec, Sohan said “so bro, where’s the ride?”
everyone was freezing when a taxi type car stopped before them. “Right on time”
Grins shourya and goes to the driver. After a small talk and some bribe, the
driver agrees to take all 6 of them in his jeep. It was apparently illegal for
more than 5 passengers to go in one jeep but nothing a little cash cannot
solve. The ride was a little bumpy, it was only getting darker.
“That took FOREVER” Shalini sighs in relief. As the group of young
adults come to the grand ancient entrance, their pupils enlarge at the sight of
many many paintings along the huge walls. The place screams royalty with high
painted ceilings and grand chandeliers. A visual representation of AURORA
singing would be a better description. It was magical but at the same time
holding the dark secrets that come with magic. The time on the old pendulum
clock on the right side of the huge lobby says 10:30pm. The lobby seemed to
belong to an old ancient castle. The whole place had traces of royalty underneath
the overcompensating modern ‘colours’. “Wow this is something” exclaims
Karthika in pure bliss. She has always been a lover of ancient art and history.
She believes in anachronism and seriously thinks SHE is the error in
chronology. She is the kind of person who would rather spend time reading
history from the library rather than the school textbooks because “they’re
brainwashed and brought down to the reading level of children”
Everyone hipped out their phones and started taking pictures. It
was too beautiful to not flaunt in instagram. It was the one beautiful thing
that happened after being thrown in foreign land. Beauty does help a helpless
being. Mahesh smiles as Karthika walks around with gaping mouth. Her eyes have
never seen anything more beautiful in her short lived life. Mahesh walks to
Karthika but shourya comes in between and asks Mahesh to come with him.
Irritated, Mahesh follows him. “What? What’s wrong?” “Why would anything be
wrong?” says shourya. “Ok fine, what’s the matter?” Mahesh says annoyingly. “Okay
guys I got the stuff, what’s next?” comes in Sohan. “You’re here too?” asks
Mahesh. As Mahesh’s confused face doesn’t seem to subside, Sohan reminds him of
the occasion. In the whole worrisome day, he forgot that it’s Shalini’s
birthday the next day. Shourya goes on explaining the great idea for party that
he planned all year. Mahesh almost forgets his hate for him when he finds
himself smiling at how much of a loving partner Shourya actually is.
After a few minutes behind the closed curtains, the boys finally
come out to the lobby. There are less people compared to before. Now it feels
more eerie than mesmerising but they put that thought aside. Kruthika sees the
way shourya goes straight to Shalini and kissed her on the lips. She wonders if
they had sex and her fist clenches. She can’t get the images of her best friend
being naked and in love with Shourya, the love of her dreams- “WHAT!” she
screams. That catches everyone’s attention. The thought of ‘love’ never crossed
her mind and therefore surprised her more than she would like to admit. Kruthika
gets lost in her thoughts and her raging war against her voice in the head
doesn’t help. Sohan comes to Kruthika and whispers “hey hey, what’s wrong?”
Karthika looks at them and knows she did the right thing by pushing Sohan to
her because she can never, in her wild imagination, be able to console anyone.
She is too rational for empty empathy. Sohan happily takes the job and takes
her to a nearby sofa, sits her down. “What happened?” Shalini says to those
left. “Homesick, probably” snickers Shourya. Shalini quickly nudges him with
her elbow and he half-heartedly apologises to Karthika. “I’ll make you feel
sorry” mumbles Karthika.
